Video games are full of fantastic music, whether its a character, stage or even menu theme. We’d like to start celebrating some of these on the blog every now and then. For our first music track we’re going to talk about…
Flying Battery Zone – Sonic & Knuckles/Sonic Mania
This is a stage theme from one of Sonic the Hedgehog’s Mega Drive era titles. The stage itself takes place on a giant flying fortress as Sonic, Tails or Knuckles traverse both its interior and exterior, filled with giant fans, rocket fuelled engines, magnetic panels and misleading item containers. This is a fan favourite stage from Sonic & Knuckles, which was lucky enough to return in the recently released Sonic Mania.
The music (particularly for Act 2) accompanies this mechanical marvel, evoking a roaring sky battle as the intensity of the winds lash against our heroes, and the tension of being surrounded by enemies fit to burst from the confines of the base. Sonic Mania’s rendition of this stage takes things a step further with stormy weather creating a very turbulent and even more fitting ride. A legendary battle of the skies is taking place within this music and it wouldn’t be mismatched against a cinematic sky battle from film or television.
A great piece of stage music, taken from a video game series that has rarely faulted on the soundtrack front.
The version we’ve chosen to here is from Sonic Mania – Flying Battery Act 2.
